چکیده

Cats are nice. (: : :) because cats never overlap. Abstract In this paper we discuss two approaches to adverbial quantiication, the so-called`bound variable approach' and thèsituation-based approach', and we address the suggestion that has been made in the literature that the latter reduces to the former as soon as the underlying structure of situations has been characterized at the required level of detail. We will rst show what constraints on situation structures are needed in order for the situation-based approach to produce the results of the bound variable approach. Then we will argue that the required constraints are at odds with the philosophy underlying the situation based approach. This result points at a principled diierence between the two approaches, and this, theoretical, diierence can be used as a heuristic to nd empirical support for any of the two approaches. the LRE Project 62-01 (FraCaS).

Quantificational Variability Effects with Plural Definites: Quantification over Individuals or Situations?

In this paper we discuss the fact that not only adverbially quantified sentences with singular indefinites or bare plurals, but also ones containing plural definites show Quantificational Variability Effects (QVEs), i.e. they receive readings according to which the quantificational force of the respective DP seems to depend on the quantificational force of the Q-adverb. We show that if the Q-ad...

The dynamic semantics of aspectual adverbs

In ordinary English aspectual adverbs such as in French and English encore/still, ne pas encore/not yet, déja/already, and enfin/finally are used to create temporal coherence in local contexts, as well as to carry prosodic features that directly indicate the speaker’s epistemic attitudes towards the course of events described. In multi-agent contexts factual information, or the content asserted...
